Happy Earth Day!

Blossoms in the spring
By Angie Quantrell @AngieQuantrell

Happy Earth Day, Earth!

What a wonderful world we live in - beautiful, fascinating, safe, peaceful, dangerous, harsh, mysterious, vast, surprising, and awe-inspiring.

I'm glad I live here.

In honor of Earth Day, I think it appropriate to give a gift.

So I will do something good for the Earth today. Maybe several somethings.

My gifts shall be:

- picking up any trash I see
- making sure I water only what needs water, not the sidewalk, gutter, or driveway
- turning off electrical devices I am not actually using
- planting something pretty (or tasty)
- giving thanks to God for such an amazing place to live

Unexpected Gift Perfectly Suits

A purrfect gift. @AngieQuantrell
By Angie Quantrell @AngieQuantrell

We were recently given a handmade gift that perfectly suited our family.

As we served an appreciation luncheon for co-workers, a certain woman, well-known for her hospitality and kindness, walked up to me and delivered a gift.

Since this luncheon was for them, I was not expecting a gift. We were doing the giving. But in her thoughtfulness, she remembered us with a hostess treasure.

When time allowed, I dug into the package and discovered a large, white hand-embroidered dish towel. Beautiful!

The homemade varieties are the best sort, are they not?

I quickly went to her table to thank her for the thoughtful gift. That was when I discovered four reasons the unexpected gift perfectly suited our family.

1. We are facing a shortage of decent dish towels. I prefer to use them until they are rags. We are breathing down the neck of the rag stage.

2. The embroidery neatley featured a cat. We love cats and have two terrorist cats of our own.

3. The embroidered cat was gray. Aha! Both of our monsters are affectionately called the Gray Girls.

4. The towel design included a cat clock of the old fashioned sort. We have a cat clock, of the new fashioned type.

I decided to use the dish towel as a mini-tablecloth. For now. @AngieQuantrell
A simple dish towel delivered true joy and pleasure for the one who was trying to give appreciation.

Have you ever received a perfect, unexpected gift?

Seahawks Loss - Good or Bad, You Don't Quit Your Family

A sports analyst I am not.

But nonetheless I was glued to every second of Superbowl 49 between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. What a beautiful, challenging, well-matched game! Both teams played excellent games.

And there for a minute, I thought we would win. The Seahawks stood poised to grasp their second Superbowl win, going down in history as one of few teams that managed to win back-to-back Superbowl games. And that chance was shattered in seconds, slipping through fingers and disappearing in the gasps of viewers around the world.

Stunned. Shocked. Devastated. Crushed. Disbelief.

Even from my armchair, I could feel and hear the collective intakes of air from all football fans, not just the Twelfth Man. I know I am not alone in enduring a sleepless night where I replayed the game, back and forth. Restless memories traipsed behind my eyes as my heart and mind tried to process tragic events.

In the end, nothing changed with all of my angst. Nothing.

The Seahawks still lost. The Patriots still won. Millions enjoyed a fantastic athletic competition. Athletes were injured, great plays were made, miracles occurred, and agonizing mistakes were recorded for posterity.

In life, we are not guaranteed every win. Sometimes we have to lose. That's how it goes. And while it matters how we win, it shows more what kind of people, what kind of family, we are when we lose.

How do we react? Who do we blame? Who do we thank? What is our attitude? What do people see?

In each of the post-game interviews that I was able to watch, every Seahawk took the high road. Blame was not cast. Teammates and coaching staff supported each other. The team was still the team. Shocked? Yes. Against each other? No. Family? Yes.

Life goes on. It rains. Plants grow. The planet revolves. The moon goes through its cycles. Babies are born. Kids go to school. People die. Families get in fights and disagreements. Good things happen. Bad things happen. Choices are made. That's life.
,
There is only one sure way to guarantee without a doubt a win. The most important event in the life of a human is not a game. It is a choice. To each is given the chance to choose for Eternity. That all might live, He came to Earth. He died for our sins. He arose from the grave. He is alive.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. ~ Ephesians 2:8 (NIV)

After that choice, it's all gravy.

Seahawks, our boys. They are family. Good or bad, win or lose, you don't quit your family.

Waiting for football season.

GO HAWKS!

12 Days of Christmas - A Stocking Game

Years ago, my college roommate and long time friend suggested that we celebrate the 12 days of Christmas by giving each other a tiny gift on each of the 12 days of Christmas before Christmas break.

It was the birth of a perfect Christmas holiday tradition. That tradition is still in effect in my family, particularly with my husband and I. The 12 Days of Christmas, in our home, has evolved over time, but basically remains the same.

Beginning yesterday, my honey and I put one wrapped gift (figuratively) in our stockings. We will do this each day until Christmas Day. Yesterday was 12 days from Christmas. Shoppers? Beware. Only 10 more shopping days!

Back to the story. By Christmas morning, we will have 12 stocking gifts. Figuratively because, instead of daily opening each gift as my roommate and I once did, we hold all gifts in a hidden spot until Christmas morn. And we don't open them until after we have our traditional turkey quiche with spicy salsa and freshly brewed coffee.

As an added twist, this year we set the price limit of $5 for each item. It must be at or below the stated cost. This not only lowers our Christmas budget, it adds a challenge to our traditional Christmas stocking game.

Homemade is fine. Sale and clearance is fine. Free is even better. As long as the cost is below a fiver, the challenge has been met.

Let me tell you, it has been a challenge. Not much is to be had for less than five bucks. If you are in the know, please help me out so I can be in the know. And get those 12 Days of Christmas covered.

Thanks.

A Favorite Gift

My favorite gift from students are when the child is proudly handing me a bag or package and the mother is standing behind, mouthing, "He picked it himself!"

Now, that is a loaded statement. That means the gift could be anything! (I once gave my parents the prettiest little shot glasses - I just fell in love with them. I was in early grade school, and I was so pleased to buy them at store. Now I understand the discussion going on over my head as to why someone my age would be buying shot glasses?!???).

I love gifts that the child has chosen by himself! Sometimes I think, wow, how cool. Sometimes I wonder and try to make a connection between the gift, the child, and myself. But always I am pleased to be remembered. Regardless of how embarrassed the parent seems to be.

This particular gift turned out to be quite nice. Lovely (gaudy, but I love gaudy) ruby red (a new sister is Ruby, maybe that's why the color was chosen?) dangly (I love dangly) earrings and matching beaded bracelet! Nothing could have been nicer.

Of course, on this particular day, I was wearing my red sweater with an old-fashioned snowman angel on it. Perfect!

"Should I put them on?" I asked.

"Oh, yes," was the happy reply.

I donned my new jewels, to the cautious comments to not poke myself and how beautiful they looked.

Later on...as we sat at the group table completing a project, the conversation turned to my new reds.

"Those are real diamonds."

"Oh, I should take care of them then," I said.

"Yes, you should lock them up." And additional tips from several students. "You could put them in a special box in your purse." "You could put them in a jewelry box." "Oh, my mom has a jewelry box." "You need to make sure the robbers don't steal them."

Pretty soon, my jewelry was forgotten as the topic of eventual theft, robbers, and whose mom's had jewelry boxes continued unabated.

Life in a kinder room.
